Creatives from all over the world land in Cork this week for a very special seminar

By Yay Cork September 10, 2018September 10, 2018

Stalled by a creative impasse?

An upcoming seminar could help you blast through the noise and get back to work on the things that excite you.

MAKING IN / 2018 is a one day event, hosted by the Joseph Walsh Studio in Riverstick, makers of incredible one-of-a-kind furniture and art.

Designed to ‘stimulate and fire the imagination of all creative minds’, the seminar, on September 15th, will feature leading international figures from the worlds of design, craft, architecture and fashion.

Confirmed speakers include Taka Kaikado, maker of hand-made tea caddies that have remained true to the original designs of Kaikado, established in 1875 shortly after Japan opened its doors to the rest of the world.

Cork artist Sara Flynn will be speaking on Creativity, Studio Practice & Material Understanding: The wonderful relentlessness of striving to improve.

Shuji Nakagawa, whose studio, Nakagawa Mokkougei, represents the fine tradition of Kyoto wood crafting, will also be in town for the event.

Sudarshan Shetty, whose painting, sculpture, installation, video, sound and performance work reflects on the nature of contemporary Indian society and the objects that define it will also speak at the seminar, as will Anike Tyrrell, who established J. HILL’s Standard as a response to the loss of hand-making skills in the glass industry in the region of Waterford and beyond.

Other participants include Irish stone sculptor Ken Thompson; Bill Haneman, maker of Union and Uilleann Pipes and the programme will be moderated by the Brooklyn-based curator, writer and historian Glenn Adamson.

Themes will include tradition, trends, innovation and globalisation and the event is designed to ‘connect like minded individuals, create a pride and a passion around the culture of making and most of all, to inspire’.

With local cuisine catered by Wildeside, live music and demonstrations, you’d be hard pressed to find a more productive way to spend a Saturday.

Tickets are €120-€150 here.
