Flood alert: Cork braces for heavy rain and drivers warned to ‘exercise extreme caution’

By Yay Cork October 23, 2023October 23, 2023

East Cork is on high alert.

As businesses continue the Storm Babet clean-up, a Status Yellow – Rain warning is in place for Cork, Clare, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, and Galway today, with Met Éireann predicting more heavy rain and thunder to start the week.

Localised flooding and difficult travel conditions are likely and the warning remains in place until 6pm on Monday evening.

“Please exercise extreme caution this morning on roads,” said Cork County Council in a statement.

“Roads are affected by debris, surface water, standing water and damage. Please also be conscious of other road users, especially pedestrians and cyclists.”

“We are asking areas which were impacted by recent flood events to be conscious of the risk of possible future flooding. Residents in flood-prone areas who have previously been issued with sandbags are advised to take all necessary precautions considering the forecast.”

Motorists have also been warned to avoid driving through flowing or standing water as there is a risk of vehicles becoming stranded in flood waters.

A morning of heavy rain will be followed by scattered showers through to this afternoon, with highest temperatures of 10 to 14 degrees in an easterly breeze.

Tonight will be cloudy with lowest temperatures of five to seven degrees.
