Cork’s wildlife rescue volunteers are busier than ever (and they need your help)

By Yay Cork May 4, 2023May 4, 2023

No squeak or tweet goes unanswered.

One of Cork’s busiest wildlife rescue services is asking the public to get behind their latest fundraising effort and help them care for the city’s hedgehogs, garden birds, birds of prey, squirrels, rabbits, bats, foxes, badgers, and otters.

Wildlife Rescue Cork, a registered charity set up in 2017, is run entirely by volunteers.

Unfortunately, the need for wildlife rescue is greatly increasing year after year and the group is hoping that an online raffle will help them raise vital funds to purchase and build more specialised animal enclosures and equipment for their centre in Whitechurch.

More than 50 Cork businesses have donated top-notch prizes for an online raffle running now at idonate.ie. Tickets are €5 and participants will be in the hat for treats such as afternoon tea at Hayfield Manor, dinner for two at Paradiso, and a Funkytown Kids Summer Camp place valued at €350.

“Our services are used when the public comes across an injured or orphaned native wild animal or a veterinary practice calls us to help with rehabilitation when they are brought into their clinics,” explains Julie Cronin, Wildlife Rescue Cork Founder and Wildlife Rehabilitator.

Cronin says the majority of the animals admitted into her care have been harmed by human activities.

“We are seeing an increasing level of casualties, sadly due to negative human interaction, whether on purpose or accidentally. Examples include cat/dog attacks, strimming injuries, illegal hedge cutting and tree felling during the summer season, animals stuck in fencing, hit by cars, poisoning (sprays and pellets), cattle grids, football netting, removing habitats, power washing nests off walls and disturbing active nests.

“It is because of the compassion of people that we are so busy, people are no longer willing to walk by an injured animal, they call us to help the little souls.”

Help Wildlife Rescue Cork reach their €15,000 goal here.
