€2m will buy you this 2,000-year-old Cork castle (and it’s hosted some famous guests)

Got your Euromillions ticket for the next draw?

If you’ve ever dreamed of waking up where Gaelic chieftains ruled, this might be the property of your dreams… and it’s right here waiting if your luck comes in.

The impressive Blackwater Castle is for sale for a cool €2 million, sitting atop 60 acres of grounds covered in mature Irish woodlands.

The property looms large in Castletownroche, built on the site of an ancient fort dating from the late Bronze age/Iron age, making it one of the oldest habitable residences in Ireland.

The castle is currently run as an exclusive wedding and banqueting venue and in its rich history has welcomed guests such as Micheal D Higgins and Micheal Jackson.

A kilometer of the River Awbeg running right through the property means its owners enjoy private double-bank fishing rights. The site also boasts its very own holy well, dedicated to St. Patrick, which peasants would pilgrimage to for its healing properties.

Who needs a driveway when you could have the dramatic, 350m long, tree-lined avenue of dreams?

This leads to the Castle and the Norman Keep, built mid-15th Century. Here, you’ll discover all of the standard medieval features used to fend off attackers back in the day, such as uneven steps (trip steps), your very own murder hole, batter walls, and a garderobe.

The tower’s rooftop lends panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, where you can survey your demesne and do your plotting in peace, all while drinking your morning coffee.

For living space, Blackwater Castle has 9,579 sq ft. This includes nine spacious suites, (sleeping up to 23 people), the Breakfast Room, the Dining Room, the Tea Room, the Bar, the Piano Room, and the Library.

A large fully equipped commercial kitchen offers the potential to continue a catering enterprise at the castle. There is also a dry store, a large utility, and basement restrooms.

Leaving the castle to the rear, you step into an atmospheric stone-fronted courtyard, which originally formed a part of the outer bailey and was created for the golden age of horse-drawn carriages. This structure has huge potential and could be turned into a residential or commercial area subject to the relevant planning permission.

Just off the courtyard, you’ll find a stunning walled garden; think The Secret Garden meets The English Market. A magical stone archway, with its gates draped in wisteria, ushers you through to the 1.5-acre space, where the lovingly maintained garden is lush with fruits and veggies.

A quaint greenhouse provides a space of quiet reflection and allows for the growing of exotic fruit and vegetables such as melons and chili.

Think it can’t get any better? On the ground floor of the Tower House sits a prize discovered by ordnance surveyors in 1837 – Blackwater Castle’s very own Sheela Na Gig.

These important relics are stone carvings of naked women displaying an exaggerated vulva, and are sacred symbols across Europe, predominantly found in Ireland.

This particular Sheela has a clear indentation where passers-by have rubbed, hoping to gain some of the figure’s magical fertility or healing powers. She was relocated from the riverside to the castle in 1934, and she remains there today.

Excuse us while we swoon.
