BusConnects plan will boost Cork’s reputation as a sustainable city – Chamber

By Yay Cork April 21, 2022April 21, 2022

Delivery and timelines will be key.

But ambitious plans for a €600m investment in the development of 12 sustainable transport corridors (STCs) in Cork have been broadly welcomed by business leaders.

Commenting on yesterday’s BusConnects announcement, CEO of Cork Chamber, Conor Healy said it heralds a significant change in terms of sustainable, active, and public transport in Cork.

“Upon implementation Cork can expect to see 54km of new cycling and walking infrastructure and 75km of new dedicated bus lanes, resulting in a 50% reduction in journey time across most of the 12 proposed corridors which is significant.”

“BusConnects Cork plans for the proposed STCs will improve accessibility and affordability of both public transport and active travel, critical elements to achieve the 15-minute city concept contained within the Draft Cork City Development Plan. The plans provide the opportunity to prioritise access to the city centre, maximising benefits for retail, leisure, and employment.”

“With plans to generate a zero-emissions fleet, BusConnects will provide a real opportunity for Cork to build its reputation as a sustainable and accessible city region, further attracting inward investment and talent.”

Mr Healy said that while the plans are welcome, timelines around delivery “must be maintained to keep up momentum.”

“Cork Chamber looks forward to contributing to the consultation process over the coming months,” he added.
