New €600m plan for Cork promises shorter bus journeys and 54km of cycle routes

By Yay Cork April 20, 2022April 20, 2022

Cork roads could soon be much safer for cyclists.

The National Transport Authority (NTA) has unveiled details of a €600m plan to create 12 new transport corridors, 75km of new bus lanes and 54km of new city cycle lanes in the coming years.

The BusConnects would see transport links between Cork city and its suburbs drastically improved, cutting journey times and encouraging the use of sustainable and public transport.

The NTA hopes to build on the 51% increase in people taking the bus in the past six years, creating a modern infrastructure that will grow with the city.

According to the plan, the changes could halve bus journey times for commuters across the network.

The 12 proposed corridors are:

* Dunkettle to City Centre
* Mayfield to City Centre
* Blackpool to City Centre
* Hollyhill to City Centre
* Airport Road to City Centre
* Maryborough Hill to City Centre
* Mahon to City Centre
* Ballincollig to City Centre
* Bishopstown to City Centre
* Togher to City Centre
* Kinsale Road to Douglas
* Sunday’s Well to Hollyhill

“As one of Europe’s fastest-growing cities, Cork has a unique opportunity to become a leader in sustainable transport.” said Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan.

“BusConnects Cork is key to making public transport and active travel a viable option for people and communities across the city.”

Public consultation on the plan will open in June, after which the NTA will publish a more detailed plan.
