Ireland’s first Alpine ice skating trail is opening in Cork for winter – here’s what to expect

This sounds very festive indeed.
Ireland’s first Alpine Skate Trail will open up among the trees at Fota on Friday, November 12th, 2021, offering a rustic day out to visitors of all ages.
At 450m, the circuit is about the length of an athletics track, and will be set in a figure of eight as it winds through the trees, creating an enchanted forest, particularly at night when it is fully illuminated.
According to the organisation behind the event, the concept of a skating trail is very popular in countries like Canada and Austria. Skaters follow a track rather than going round and round a rink, creating a more engaging – and socially distant – experience.

“We realised that as things opened up again we could be forced to revisit the format of the traditional ice rink to minimise the risks of people mixing closely,” said Bill Cremin, Managing Director of Cool Running Events.
“We set about researching what was possible, and are delighted to be able to launch the Alpine Skate Trail in Cork.”
As well as the main trail, which is sheltered from the elements, there will also be a small rink for younger skaters and a selection of refreshments and other activities on offer for groups enjoying a day out.
Tickets, from €10, are available online at iceskating.ie, with limited early bird tickets on sale from September 30th, 2021.
