Burglaries are down 28% in Cork (but thieves are eyeing the end of lockdown)

By Yay Cork April 20, 2021April 20, 2021

The lockdown has made things difficult for burglars.

In fact, the latest CSO figures show that burglaries decreased by 28% in Cork during 2020, with a total reduction of 29% in Munster and 35% nationwide as coronavirus restrictions kept homeowners housebound.

With restrictions about to be lifted, however, the home safety company PhoneWatch is highlighting that thieves continue to operate nationwide, with one burglary taking place every 48 minutes in 2020.

Almost 11,000 burglaries and other related offences occurred nationwide last year, with 2,032 burglaries taking place in Munster. Cork was the hotspot in Munster with 592 reported incidents, while Limerick reported 574 burglaries, Tipperary 277, Waterford 226, Clare coming in with 182 and Kerry reporting 181.

Double-check your doors and windows

“We have been keeping a close eye on the CSO burglary figures over the past 12 months and welcome the good news that the total amount of burglaries nationwide is declining,” said Eoin Dunne, Managing Director of PhoneWatch.

“However, as the country begins to open up and we all start to travel a little more, it is vital we consider our home safety.”

PhoneWatch reminded householders to check that all windows and doors are securely locked when leaving the house, make sure garden equipment or bicycles are secured in a shed or garage and make a habit of closing gates, especially those leading to the rear of the home.

Other tips include pruning trees and shrubs for clearer views (large bushes can act as cover for anyone who may be watching a home) and leaving a light on while you’re away.
