In town this weekend? Check out this whopping new 3D mural by Cork artist Deirdre Breen

It’s brilliantly trippy.
Visual artist Deirdre Breen’s beautiful new mural at Cork Printmakers is almost complete, adding another stop to the map of the city’s growing collection of public artworks.
The three-storey tall design at Wandesford Quay was co-commissioned by Backwater Artists Group, Cork Printmakers and the Lavit Gallery as part of Cork City Council’s Placemaking initiative.

The graphic in the optical illusion artwork, which looks different depending on which direction you approach it from, is based on architectural features from the front of the building.
The red references the sandstone shade of the building walls, while the ‘Virgin Mary’ blue picks up the window frames chosen by the architects who restored the Cork Printmakers building and gallery.

Working on a cherry picker, Deirdre completed the giant art installation over the past week. The finishing touches will be applied this weekend.
You can watch a short documentary on the project, made by Colm Walsh, here:
Deirdre, who is currently undertaking a Masters in Art and Process at the Crawford College of Art and Design, has had a busy summer.
In August she joined Cork-based illustrator and sign painter Laurynas Damijonaitis to transform the front of the Stone Valley Coffee Roasters coffee shop on Clonakilty’s Ashe Street.
