6 cool things to check out at this weekend’s Marina Sunday Market

By Katie Mythen-Lynch September 18, 2020September 18, 2020

We’re really looking forward to this one.

The first Marina Sunday Market will be open for visitors from 9am this Sunday morning and it looks like there’s going to be a little something for everyone.

The market is set up within repurposed old Ford industrial buildings on Cork’s Centre Park Road, making it easily accessible from town or along the Blackrock to city centre greenway via the recently pedestrianised Marina Walk.

“This is an all-weather market for the most part with at least 15 other market stalls on opening day, including crafts, health products, speciality foods, health foods, street foods, music, body art and grooming.” say the organisers.

If you’re unfamiliar with the area, the Eircode T12 YX76 will get you there.

Here are 6 cool things to check out this Sunday:

1. A PRE-LUNCH WORKOUT

If you fancy burning off a few calories before you hit the cake and coffee circuit, fitness coach Lesley Giltinan of Lean With Lesley has your back. Lesley will be hosting a live workout at the Marina Market this Sunday, kicking off at 11am.

All fitness levels are welcome – all you need to bring is a bottle of water and an exercise mat. Book your place (€10pp) here.

2. A BRASS ACT

You can expect a party atmosphere on opening day with local brass band Code of Behaviour entertaining visitors to the first Marina Sunday Market.

The set will include their own arrangements of modern covers, traditional New Orleans standards and original tunes, with trumpets, trombones, mellophone, saxophone, sousaphone and drums and the occasional bit of singing (and dancing) thrown in.

3. GUJI COFFEE

If we’re going to make the 9am start on a Sunday morning, we’re going to be needing a hefty dose of caffeine when we get there. Happily, GUJI will be all set up in their brand new custom container, with top-notch coffee to fuel your browsing activities.

4. PLANT SWAP

From a rainwater harvesting system for flushing to loos to a BioGas converter that turns organic waste into electricity and heat, the Marina Market has some serious green credentials.

This weekend you can get in on a little green action yourself at a Plant Swap hosted by Little Leaves Studio from 10am until 6pm. You can either bring a plant to swap or purchase plants at the market.

“Any healthy, pest-free plants are welcome!” says the crew.

“You also can bring seeds, rooted or unrooted cuttings, pots, planters and anything else plant-related that you think another plant lover could re-home. Even if you don’t have anything to share, come and meet the plant parent community.”

5. BIA REBEL

Belfast’s Bia Rebel Ramen will be on Leeside starting this Sunday, dishing up their delectable dishes to grateful Cork folk. Celebrity chef Yotam Ottolenghi visited Bia Rebel last year, later posting a glowing review of his experience complete with a photo on Instagram for his 1.2m followers around the globe.

6. POP-UP ART

Wexford-based Lativian visual artist Zane Sutra will be treating visitors to a pop-up exhibition at the Marina Market this Sunday.

Zane has exhibited internationally and her work is featured in one of Ireland’s finest private collections at the Kelly Rosslare Spa hotel. Visit ZaneSutra.com for a sneak peek.
