According to acting chief medical officer Ronan Glynn, the coming week is likely to bring a significant number of new confirmed cases.
“I sincerely hope we’re sitting here in a weeks’ time and we have a handful of cases and people are complaining that we moved too quickly with disproportionate measures – but we’ll just have to wait and see.” said Dr Glynn.
“I believe we’ll have days with significant numbers of cases and days with fewer cases over the next week.”
Government to work on new ‘medium-term’ plan
A decision to create a flexible new plan to handle the ongoing issues associated with the pandemic in Ireland was agreed at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Covid-19 today.
Based on the direction of the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET), the “medium-term plan” will not include set phases but will be adapted to deal with localised cluster outbreaks of Covid-19 if and when they arise until the middle of 2021.
Greece will remain on the Green List
The Government also confirmed that Greece will remain on Ireland’s travel ‘Green List’ for the time being, despite a spike in coronavirus cases in the popular holiday destination.
All restaurants and bars have been ordered to close by midnight in several regions and islands including Crete, Thessaloniki, Corfu, Mykonos, Paros, Santorini, Rhodes, Antiparos, Zakynthos and Kos after the country reported 203 cases, its highest daily tally of new Covid-19 infections since the beginning of the pandemic, on Sunday and a further 126 cases on Monday.
Health Minister Vasilis Kikilias said that 1,453 of the country’s 5,749 cases are related to travel from abroad.
