If you like social distancing, you’ll love this five-bed farmhouse on Cape Clear

By Katie Mythen-Lynch March 27, 2020April 29, 2020

Were you into social distancing before Covid-19?

If you enjoy the peace and quiet of rural life and you’re happiest in your own company most of the time, there’s a home for sale on Cape Clear with your name on it.

A handsomely restored traditional farmhouse with jaw-dropping views and a whimsical interior, the property sits at North Comillane, Cape Clear, Ireland’s southernmost inhabited Gaeltacht island.

Population? Just over 100 people, dotted across the three-mile-long, one-mile-wide island, which has the unique benefit of being ‘crime-free’.

As well as being dreamy to look at, the farmhouse, which is listed with Tristan Kingston of Hodnett Forde at a reasonable €249,500, has been renovated and extended into a home full of style and character. Each room has been individually decorated with hand-painted murals by the owners.

Outside there is a traditional stone barn which could be turned into more accommodation for guests, a workshop or a serene studio for painting or crafts.

If you do find yourself in need of some human interaction, there’s Séan Rua’s Restaurant and An Siopa Beag, the Cape Clear Island’s grocery shop, is located in North Harbour, where you can pop in for pizza, fresh veggies and Post Office services.

Cotter’s Bar is also an option and you can get a pint and a toastie there too.

Cape Clear is eight miles by ferry from the picturesque harbour town of Baltimore and the Dun na Óir II ferry operates every day of the year except for Christmas Day. In the winter there are generally two services per day with up to four added in the summer when tourists visit for bird watching, Irish college at Coláiste Pobail Chléire and the famous Storytelling Festival in September.

With Megalithic standing stones, a 5000-year-old passage grave and a 12th-century church ruin to explore and whales, leatherback turtles, dolphins and sharks to spot from your garden wall, you may find you never want to leave.
