Coronavirus: Schools close and indoor gatherings CANCELLED after 6pm

A shut-down is in force.
The government has introduced strict new rules to limit the spread of coronavirus, with 42 confirmed cases in the Republic of Ireland.
In new measures announced by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, all schools, third-level institutions and public facilities such as creches and childcare facilities have been ordered to close today from 6pm today until March 29th, 2020.
All indoor gatherings of 100 people and outdoor gatherings of 500 people are to be cancelled with immediate effect in an effort to protect vulnerable people from becoming ill with Covid-19.
Social distancing
Shops will remain open but workers are advised to work remotely wherever possible. Restaurants and cafes can remain open for now but management have been advised to implement strict social distancing techniques.
“The following measures are being put in place, and they will stay in place until the 29 of March. Schools, colleges, and childcare facilities will close from tomorrow.” said An Taoiseach, speaking from the US, where he is due to meet President Trump at the White House today.
“Where possible teaching will be done online or remotely and cultural institutions will close as well.”
Visiting restrictions are in place at hospitals, care homes and prisons, while social distancing measures are also being implemented at homeless facilities.
The Taoiseach declared public health the priority and said that “unfortunately we must face the tragic reality that some people will die”.
