Got an idea for an event or mural? Get city funding to make it happen

By Yay Cork January 14, 2020January 14, 2020

They’re the little additions that make life interesting.

Over the past twelve months, Cork has become a place where large scale art installations are commonplace, from the Kingfisher Mural on Lavitts Quay to the People’s Parklet on Douglas Street and the La Cochina Publica dinners held outdoors as part of Cork Midsummer Festival.

All of those unique examples were supported by the City Council’s City Centre Placemaking Fund, which aims to encourage projects which enhance and enliven people’s experience of the city centre.

After a very successful pilot last year, Cork City Council is once again inviting proposals from city centre-based community and business groups with an idea that could potentially increase footfall and support the local economy in their neighbourhood or street.

Grants of up to €10,000 are available for capital projects, although many projects may cost much less.

‘A sense of place’

“Creating a sense of place is key to a vibrant city centre.” said Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr John Sheehan.

“As part of its city centre strategy, Cork City Council has been actively encouraging groups at a street or neighbourhood level to work collectively to enhance their area. We have several examples of this and we believe this is another tool to help support that process.

“Things like planting, murals, interesting events, atmospheric lighting and creative seating make our public spaces more people-friendly and attractive.”

An information session for interested groups will be held on Monday, January 20th at 2.30pm in the Multimedia Room, City Hall. To book a place email donal_guerin@corkcity.ie.
