Rosscarbery’s old Garda Barracks is now an adorable dog-friendly Airbnb

By Katie Mythen-Lynch November 7, 2019November 5, 2019

It’s one of the oldest buildings in Rosscarbery.

And while traditionally, a night spent in the Garda barracks was nobody’s idea of a good time, you’re guaranteed a comfy sleep at the Old Barracks; they’ve been transformed into cosy accommodation for visitors.

These days the Georgian building can comfortably accommodate up to twelve self-catering guests and their canine companions at €300 per night.

That’s a bargain €25 a head for a group getaway.

The Old Garda Barracks is easy to spot; it’s the only stone-fronted building in the Market Square. Just look out for the scarlet front door.

Inside, the owners have restored many of the building’s original features, including a traditional-style parlour with a wood-burning stove set into its original fireplace, cornicing, flooring and a large landing upstairs with a table, chairs and reading material – a dream spot for the family bookworm.

The bedrooms boast old-fashioned touches such as hand-crocheted coverlets, cushions and rugs on old wooden floorboards. It’s like spending the weekend at your Nan’s.

At the rear of the property you’ll find a fully equipped modern kitchen and a spacious dining room designed to seat 12 for those big family dinners. A patio door in the dining room opens onto a courtyard garden, safely enclosed with picnic table, barbecue and space for children to play.

The property is a two-minute walk to the local shops and pubs and there are plenty of options for lunches and dinners nearby (make a reservation if you plan on trying the seasonal fare at Pilgrim’s).

Guests can expect hot water bottles on the beds and a welcome pack of breakfast treats to be waiting in the house when they arrive too – they didn’t get that kind of service back in the Garda Barracks heyday.
