Heatwave warning as dangerously high temperatures hit Europe

By Yay Cork July 25, 2019July 25, 2019

You wouldn’t know it if you looked out the window in Cork this morning.

Still, if you’re heading off on holidays today, it’s wise to be mindful of the dangerously powerful heatwave affecting other parts of Europe.

While we’re looking at another damp, warm and humid afternoon with temperatures of between 18C and 19C, travellers heading to Paris will be facing highs of a scorching 42C today, the hottest conditions in 72 years.

#Canicule Des #records absolus (tous mois confondus) de température maximale sont menacés pour la journée de jeudi, notamment à Paris, Lille, Rouen, Orléans, Reims, Dijon, Nancy ou encore Strasbourg.

In Britain, the Met Office has warned that temperatures could exceed 38.5C.

Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands are also baking as the mercury hits the high 30s and early 40s, with experts warning that the summer’s second heatwave can be attributed to global warming.

According to research by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, northern Europe’s 2018 heatwave would have been ‘statistically impossible’ without manmade climate change.

Although the predicted temperatures aren’t as extreme as those in France and the UK, other popular Irish holiday destinations are in for prolonged sunshine this week too.

Athens is a balmy 32C, Venice will be 31C by this afternoon, while Ibiza and Barcelona are expecting temperatures of 32C today.

Lisbon is expecting a balmy 28C day, dropping slightly to 24C by Saturday and holidaymakers in Nice will enjoy highs of between 31C and 32C.

Meanwhile, Lanzarote is proving the most comfortable of the lot for shade seekers, with gusty wind forecast and highs of 22C.
