PICS: Inside the Union Hall farmhouse that comes with its very own castle

By Katie Mythen-Lynch February 4, 2019April 29, 2020

It’s stood in this spot since 1560.

Now you could be the king or queen of Raheen Castle, just two miles outside the lovely fishing village of Union Hall, provided you have a cool €1.4m to hand over.

The former fortress is for sale as part of a stunning property that just hit the market in Barahane, Raheen.

The castle is in ruins of course, but don’t worry; the main dwelling is a sprawling period farmhouse with five bedrooms, six bathrooms, slate floors and panelled walls so it’s fit for royalty.

Listed with Charles McCarthy Estate Agents for the first time in three decades, with private frontage to Castlehaven Harbour, the farmhouse is a dream for sailing and water sports enthusiasts.

Across the bay you’ll find Castletownsend Marina and nearby Reen Pier is a popular spot for kayaking and deep-sea fishing.

A huge conservatory wraps around the dining room so you can take in views of the rolling sea as you enjoy your breakfast all year ’round.

In the summer however, you might prefer to sip your coffee in the adorable glass summer house on the lawn.

With all this space to enjoy, you’ll be inviting your nearest and dearest for extended stays of course. Across the courtyard, a stone outbuilding has been converted into a three-bedroom guest cottage so there’s plenty of room for visitors.

A separate garage and store rooms will ensure all clutter is kept out of view too.

The ancestral home of the O’Donovans, an ancient royal family, the castle was built around 1560. It was severely damaged by Cromwellian forces in the Battle of Kinsale in 1641.

In fact, canon balls remain lodged in the stonework of the west wall to this day.

Happily the tower house no longer needs to fend off bows and arrows, but it remains one of the most iconic vistas on the West Cork coastline.
