House prices are on the rise again.
With the property market rebounding in all parts of the county (experts forecast a spike of 5% in 2021) more Cork house hunters than ever are reconsidering their options.
If you’ve always harboured a notion of finding a dilapidated country cottage and turning it into a rural dream home, there are plenty of options in and around Cork’s quaint and quiet country villages and towns.
While choosing the renovation route is a good way to keep your monthly mortgage payments nice and low, you will need a good grounding in building basics or the support of an experienced construction professional to make the average cut-price dwelling habitable, but there are many rewards waiting for those brave enough to take on the challenge.
Here are three cottages currently on the market for under €70,000:
1. The Old Cottage, Ladysbridge, Midleton, Co. Cork
Asking price: €65,000
This quirky old cottage sits on a circa 0.2-acre development site located within the village boundary of Ladysbridge. There’s a lawned area and raised vegetable beds, but if you’re not keen on living in a teeny tigín, it’s also suitable for development. According to agents Hegarty Properties, “the proposition would be a c. 1,700 sq. ft. two-storey dwelling (adjacent to the existing cottage)” all subject to planning permission.
The location is superb, with a shop and post office within walking distance and Garryvoe and Ballinwilling beaches and the Knockadoon cliff walk nearby.
2. Keelnahulla, Kanturk, Co. Cork
Asking price: €70,000
There are fewer than 1,500 traditional thatched cottages remaining in Ireland and this charming example extends to around 1,200 square feet.
Both durable and environmentally friendly, thatched roofing is completed using natural reeds and provides some of the best insulation available. It is a slow process and it can take a few months to finish a full roof, but it lasts for decades.
Inside this Keelnahulla cottage, you’ll find a reception hallway, sitting room, kitchen, dining room, three bedrooms and bathroom. Outside there’s a tarmac driveway to the side and a yard to the rear with a well-maintained garden to the front.
3. Taur, Newmarket, Co. Cork
Asking price: €60,000
Listed with Liam Murphy Auctioneers, this cute three-bedroom detached residence extends to around 1,000 square feet and stands on a 0.3 ha site.
It’s situated in the townland of Taur in Northwest County Cork, surrounded by rolling green fields and countryside. There’s work to be done inside but the basics are there and with a little elbow grease and a good eye for design, it could make a very sweet rural abode.
