It might be the missing link in your routine.
We all reach for the Vitamin C when we’re feeling under the weather, but adding a dash of this powerful antioxidant to your skincare routine could be just the boost you need heading into 2020.
It’s a low-drama addition too; suitable for pretty much any skin type (just use it alongside your regular skin-specific routine), the benefits are many, from fine line plumping to smoothing.
Of course, adding vitamin C rich foods to your diet is an excellent idea, especially at this time of year (it can’t be stored in the body so you need to keep topping up). You can get the best bang for your buck from oranges and grapefruit, broccoli, red peppers, and kiwi fruit. Even a dollop of gut-healthy sauerkraut can deliver a decent dose.
But used topically, Vitamin C has an uncanny ability to brighten the skin. If you’re wondering what this might look like, imagine the rosy glow you get after you swim the sea or go for a jog on a frosty morning; it’s a healthy, rested, lit-from-within kind of effect… and it takes years off.
Here are some of the best Vitamin C skincare products to try this month:
First things first; this hydrating enzyme masque smells like an explosion in an orange grove. Pop it on for between five and 30 minutes (we like to let it work for as long as possible) and it gently exfoliates the buildup of dull, dry skin, feeding the fresh skin underneath with nourishing Vitamins A, C, and E. A splash of ice-cold water to rinse it off and the effect is as good as a facial.

THE EYE TREATMENT
Think about it; the eyes never stop moving during your waking hours. Brand new this month, Dermalogica’s new Biolumin-C Eye Serum is designed to outsmart visible premature skin aging caused by daily eye movements and environmental stress. Supercharged with highly bioavailable Vitamin C, the lightweight serum promises to dramatically brighten and visibly firm the skin around the eyes.

This potent Vitamin C concoction is formulated with 12.5% Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid. A firm favourite among Kiehl’s fans, Powerful-Strength Vitamin C Serum does exactly what it promises on the bottle; expect visibly reduced lines and wrinkles and fewer visible pores in just two weeks of twice-daily use. Expect a gentle warming or tingling sensation the first few times you apply the serum (this can be expected with most Vitamin C serums).
Another recommended serum is Clarins Mission Perfection. Made with acerola extract, which is high in Vitamin C, this formula promotes a more even complexion by minimising dark spots and colour changes in the skin.
Get it: Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength Vitamin C Serum is €58 and Clarins Mission Perfection Serum is €60, both available at Debenhams, Patrick Street, Cork
THE FACE OIL
If you’re not familiar with the Sunday Riley brand, know this; it can be found in the bathroom cabinets of Cameron Diaz and Victoria Beckham. The range is pricey but a few drops of the C.E.O. Glow Vitamin C + Turmeric Face Oil massaged into the skin twice daily will give you a just-back-from holidays glow, even if you’ve been up all night with a screaming baby. The oil is enhanced with Golden Tumeric to reduce redness, while Red Raspberry and Jojoba Oil work to alleviate dehydration and retain moisture.
