Setbacks are a natural part of the mental health recovery process.
After all; everybody has ups and downs, but it’s how you deal with them that matters.
If you or somebody you know has had a mental health setback and is looking to get back on their feet, there’s a free one-year course that could help.
The Focus Programme
Thoughtfully developed by the National Learning Network (NLN) and the HSE Mental Health Services in Cork, The Focus Programme is a community-based wellness and personal development training programme that starts this October at the National Learning Network, Penrose Wharf, Cork City.
The 12-month course is not just free, students can also retain their current social welfare payments while they are supported to gain the confidence, knowledge and skills to take control over their futures.
Instructors work individually with students to help them to develop an action plan and achieve their goals.
Meanwhile, increasing social participation opens the door to progress onto employment, further training or education.
‘I got my confidence back’
The subjects are varied and interesting. For example, the ‘Health and Wellbeing’ element of the course includes mental health management, stress/tension management, healthy lifestyles, assertiveness, creative skills and WRAP (Wellness and Recovery Action Planning), all delivered as a key recovery tool in the programme.
“Before starting the Focus Programme, I was full of fear, anxiety and depression.” shares a past student.
“As the year went on I got my confidence back, was stress free and became much more sociable with the wider community. This was all thanks to the staff, who were more than helpful on every given occasion and the level of support was outstanding.”
Another of this year’s students added: “This course has helped with my anxiety, I have somewhere to go every day and have made friends. I am less inhibited socially now.”
