A Cork DJ has praised these publicans for going ahead with gigs, despite restrictions

It’s a tough industry at the best of times.
But after the Government announced fresh Covid-19 restrictions last week, entertainers were once more left dealing with a flurry of cancellations at the worst possible time.
Thankfully, some of Cork’s top publicans stepped up to the plate and made sure that their regular DJs weren’t left with no gigs on the run-up to Christmas.
Justin O’Donnell, Cork DJ and member of the Cuttin’ Heads Collective, took to Facebook to thank those who decided to open early this week in order to offset the loss of time and wages for their staff:
“In an unbelievably cool turn of events most of my gigs over the next couple weeks are still going ahead,” said Justin.
“The Vicarstown Bar, Brú Bar, Cask and Electric are all moving everything back earlier, not because it makes financial sense to do it, but just so they can avoid layoffs and can put money in their staff’s pockets before Christmas. They don’t need DJs at 5 in the afternoon, they’re just really {sic} sound.”
“Even after the brutal couple years they’ve had, they’re still going out of their way to look after people. I will always remember the way they handled themselves through this time.”
“You have to love Cork. ,” he added.
Local musicians, singers, DJs and hospitality staff took to the comments to praise the decision.
Christiana Underwood, Cork music teacher, singer, and daughter of Cork legend and soul singer Karen Underwood, said “This is making me really emotional. I just think our publicans have been treated as harshly as us in the arts and the absolute legends doing everything they can to keep us safe and keep people employed. This is fecking beautiful.”
We have to agree.
